Renovo CNC accepts STEP and IGES files; however, we recommend STEP file formats AP203 or AP214.
STEP files (Standard for the Exchange of Product Data) is a neutral 3D CAD format that can be interpreted and shared between most CAD programs.
AP203 is the earliest and most basic format that defines solid models’ geometry, topology, and configuration management data for mechanical parts and assemblies.
AP214 has everything an AP203 file includes but adds colors, layers, geometric dimensioning, and tolerance.
AP242 combines everything in AP203 and AP214 and is the new model-based 3D design and engineering standard.
What file format is best for generating Instant Quotes?
AP203 or AP214 provides all the required information for developing the CAM tool paths for CNC machining. All of the additional information contained in AP242, although helpful in providing engineering and design intent, is not required for creating the CNC tool paths.
Depending on the part configuration uploaded for an instant quote, the additional information provided in AP242 can increase the price.
Most CAD systems will output in either AP203 or AP214 file formats. If your system outputs only AP242, you can use an online STEP file converter or contact us, and we will convert the file.
